In India, 341 million people -- 29.1 percent of the population -- live in urban areas. Almost 43 million of these urban-dwellers live in slums. Most slum-dwellers live in extremely vulnerable and marginalized conditions. Slums are characterized by a lack of basic services, including water, sanitation, health and education. Almost all slum-dwellers work in the informal sector without legal protection or social security.

Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA), an NGO based in Mumbai, has been a Rooftops Canada partner since 1996. Rooftops Canada initially helped YUVA promote housing in very poor communities, assisting people who had been forcibly evicted or who lived on the street.
YUVA is now promoting economic development activities among women and youth. YUVA is building the management capacities of Chaitanya Bamboo Cooperative, which sells traditional bamboo products and Matrutva Catering Cooperative, engaging 40 women in catering contracts and running canteens. YUVA also works with three credit cooperatives in Mumbai and Nagpur that together have over 1,800 members and approximately Rs.2.15 Million ($54,000) in savings and loans.
YUVA participates in a joint venture with the City Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra -- the CIDCO YUVA Building Centre. The Centre has developed an innovative technology for recycling construction waste. Rooftops Canada is supporting YUVA with the management and scaling up these activities.
Rooftops Canada is also working with YUVA’s urban constituencies to address HIV and AIDS among the urban poor – linking up with African partners to share experiences.
