A Ripple Affect: Kenya
Susan is a determined farmer in Nairobi who’s transforming her life and those around her through urban agriculture. She farms with a community of thirteen women who support one another by sharing resources, ideas, and knowledge. She took part in urban agriculture and food systems training through Rooftops Canada’s Women’s Spaces project. Before attending the training, Susan struggled to increase vegetable production on her small urban plot. She used sacks and buckets as planters, producing just enough food to feed her family.
Donors made it possible for Susan to gain new skills and techniques to bring in a bigger harvest and build the confidence to share what she learned with her peers. Together, Susan and her farming group built cone gardens to grow food vertically, making the most of their limited space. By learning to farm more efficiently, they’re growing more food than ever. With the extra produce, they’re not just feeding their families—they’re selling the surplus to earn additional income.
Please donate today to help women like Susan access transformative training to strengthen community food systems. By making better use of their small plots of land, these women can grow more food for the community, earn more money, and provide greater security and care for their families. This financial security allows them to invest in their land and housing—a crucial step toward building sustainable futures for themselves and their communities.
Susan’s story shows how sharing knowledge and working together can help a community grow. She is teaching her children about urban farming and plans to continue sharing what she has learned with others, inviting more people, especially women, into a world of new opportunities.
At Rooftops Canada, we envision a world where everyone has a secure place to live in peace and dignity. Your donation today is key in achieving this vision, creating lasting change for communities worldwide.
