Ugandan Housing Delegation Visits Canada to Exchange Knowledge on Housing Rights

From March 24–28, 2025, Rooftops Canada welcomed a delegation of housing professionals from Kampala, Uganda, as part of the Women’s Spaces project. The visit focused on learning from Canada’s experiences with affordable housing solutions—such as housing cooperatives, community land trusts, and legal tools that support the right to housing. Delegates also explored governance models, finance strategies, and policy frameworks that support inclusive, sustainable urban development.

The study visit provided an important learning exchange within the broader Women’s Spaces project —an ambitious five-year initiative (2022–2027) implemented in partnership with the Government of Canada. This project aims to advance women’s equal rights to land, housing, and livelihoods in urban informal settlements in Angola, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda. In Uganda, the project, led by Shelter and Settlements Alternatives (SSA), works to strengthen land and housing tenure security through the promotion of gender-responsive, participatory land information tools, a community paralegal system, and inclusive urban governance.

By bringing together Ugandan and Canadian housing professionals, the visit provided a platform for shared learning and connection. Although the contexts may differ, there are many shared challenges. This exchange highlighted innovative, gender-responsive solutions that can be adapted to improve land and housing tenure security for vulnerable populations globally.
